Hosted by An Foras Feasa and the School of English, Media and Theatre Studies
Proposals for papers are invited for the 34th annual conference of the International Association of
Irish Literatures (IASIL) to be held at NUI Maynooth, 26 – 30 July 2010.
The conference theme is ‘Irish Literatures and Culture: New and Old Knowledges’.
Plenary speakers include Luke Gibbons (NUI Maynooth), Marjorie Howes (Boston College),
Patrick Lonergan (NUI Galway), Bríona Nic Dhiarmada (University of Notre Dame)
and Clair Wills (Queen Mary, University of London).
The aim of the conference is to address the emergence of new interpretations and
understandings of Irish literature and culture and their relationship to older,
established practices. Papers are invited that address the conference theme by
means of specific case-studies and/or through theoretical, comparative approaches.
Proposals for panels (to include a designated chairperson and three or four participants)
are especially welcome on thematic subjects and/or comparative contexts.
IASIL's commitment is to advance scholarly research into all and every area of Irish literatures,
including both Irish language and English language literatures, and in a diversity of disciplines
encompassing film, media studies, theatre studies and cultural theory. The 2010 conference will
also feature a series of postgraduate workshops, for which a separate call exists (see below).
All conference participants must be members of IASIL.
Papers should be no longer than 20 mins. Please send an abstract, of not more than 200 words per
paper, to: iasil@nuim.ie before 17 March 2010 (final call).
