In 2008 Ukraine has declared a national remembrance day to commemorate the 'Holodomor', the devastating 1932-1933 famine in the wake of Stalin's collectivisation and grain requisitions. In Ireland, debates about how to commemorate the Great Famine appropriately are continuing. Until very recently, however, historical backgrounds, facts and processes have been discussed with limited attention to the memorial culture that emanates from secular events. The way in which the past is visualised or materialised, however, shapes the public perception of historical experiences in many and often contradictory ways.
