Description

Holodomor in Ukraine and Great Famine in Ireland

Histories, Representations and Memories

Conference at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, 6-7 November 2009

The Department of History at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, An Foras Feasa: the Institute for Research in Irish Historical and Cultural Traditions, and the Centre for the Study of Wider Europe at NUI Maynooth invite interested scholars to a comparative conference on famines in Ukraine and Ireland. (Programme)

In 2008 Ukraine has declared a national remembrance day to commemorate the 'Holodomor', the devastating 1932-1933 famine in the wake of Stalin's collectivisation and grain requisitions. In Ireland, debates about how to commemorate the Great Famine appropriately are continuing. Until very recently, however, historical backgrounds, facts and processes have been discussed with limited attention to the memorial culture that emanates from secular events. The way in which the past is visualised or materialised, however, shapes the public perception of historical experiences in many and often contradictory ways.

The Maynooth conference will offer an opportunity for specialists in history, economics, cultural studies, geography, literature and the arts to discuss the famines in both Ireland and Ukraine and their respective place in historiography and memorial culture in a comparative perspective. The conference will feature five panels, devoted to the issues of (i) latest research, (ii) recent historiography (iii) memorial culture as materialized in monuments, museums or exhibitions and (iv) the famines in literature and cinema. A concluding round table will discuss the Irish and Ukrainian cases against the backdrop of global experience. Mr. Jim Callery, the founder of Ireland's famine museum at Strokestown House, will deliver the keynote lecture.

Fees

The conference Fee is €50 (€25 for students) for participants registered before October 31. The fee upon registration at the conference is €60 (€30 for students).
